The World Health Organization says that 1.1 billion people, or 15 percent of the world’s population, practice open defecation. Put a little differently, if you counted every single person in all of the Americas — North, South, Central and everywhere in between — and then added about 1.5 million, that’s the number of people worldwide who have no place to defecate other than in fields, forests, bushes, bodies of water and other open spaces.
