Kodiak Building Partners

The Challenge

Kodiak Building Partners (KBP) needed to elevate its brand and promote its industry expertise to help attract a high-value acquisition offer. Keeton came on at the end of a strategic planning period focused on accelerating growth from $400 million in revenue to $3 billion, tasked with creating a PR program to shine a light on Kodiak’s incredible success story with the end-goal of securing capital, either through acquisition or other means, to fund the company’s next stage of growth.

Despite being Colorado’s third largest privately owned company and one of the largest employers in the state at the time, few people had heard of Kodiak. We were tasked with raising the company’s profile and establishing Kodiak’s leadership more visibly in the building materials industry and the Colorado business community.

Results

The Solution

Kodiak hired Keeton Public Relations to create and implement a strategic PR plan that would positively position the company in a competitive space. The goals of the PR program were:

  • Elevate Kodiak’s presence in business and trade media beyond news release pickups by developing relationships with reporters and pitching deeper stories than a news release could deliver.
  • Establish/further Kodiak and its leadership team as thought leaders through interviews, awards and speaking engagements, which would elevate the voices of the company’s CEO and other executives.

Keeton PR, together with the Kodiak team, implemented several strategic initiatives to help the company achieve its goals:

  • Media tour: Introduced media to the company and CEO Steve Swinney during a strategic media tour, engaging trade publications and local Colorado business media. This led to several interviews, established relationships and resulted in positive articles about the company.
  • Awards: Implemented awards campaign to help with the company’s external and internal messaging, demonstrating that the KBP team’s achievements weren’t run of the mill, but truly noteworthy and valid among peers and colleagues. From 40 Under 40 to Top Distributor, KBP has earned several meaningful awards positioning the company as a bonafide leader in the industry.
  • Key messaging: Created several versions to evolve with the company as it grew, and to address moments in time that warranted specific evaluation. Key messages have ranged from the standard who we are, what we do and why we do it to crisis messaging, and KBP 3.0 to sale of the company messaging.

Over the past four years, the Kodiak Building Partners PR program has helped the company achieve recognition that has led to impressive growth. KPB has been included in 291 media placements and won 17 notable awards.
